350M€ new ESA contracts to develop Vega E and Increase Vega C launch rate up to 6/year

Paris, December 18th 2024 – Today ESA signed multiple contracts with Avio to advance the development of its next-generation launcher, Vega-E, and to increase the number of flights per year of the Vega-C rocket.

Two contracts were signed between ESA and Avio, amounting to approximately EUR 350 million and covering a three-year time horizon:

Five firing test of M10 engine successfully completed

Avio has now competed the first five firing tests of DM2 model of M10, the 100kn thrust liquid oxygen/methane engine that will power the upper stage of the Vega E launcher. Optimal performance achieved in 45sec tests at max pressure and Ox rich mixture ratio. Now we are ready to prepare long duration and variable thrust firings.

Record budget for Italy at ESA Ministerial Council more than €700M of new contracts expected starting from 2023

Rome, 28 November 2022 – The Ministerial Council of ESA Member States took place in Paris on Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 November, allocating budgets for space research and development programs for the three-year period 2023-2025.


Overall, the European space budget rose 17 percent over the previous three-year period to €16.9 bn, the largest in ESA's history.

"Next Gen EU" contracts funded with 340M Euro at completion signed by Avio for the development of new green liquid propulsion launchers

Rome, June 29, 2022 – Today the first two contracts of Italy’s implementation of the “Next Gen EU” initiatives for Space were awarded to Avio. In the past few months, the Italian Government had decided to invest around 340M€ to improve the technological capability of the Italian industry for “Access to Space”, entrusting the European Space Agency (ESA) as the Contracting Authority with the supervision of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Italian Space Agency and the Ministry of Innovation & Digital Transformation.

Successful firing of the new M10 engine for Vega E

Colleferro, 6 May 2022 – The new M10 oxygen/methane engine for Vega E was successfully tested yesterday at Avio's new Space Propulsion Test Facility (SPTF) at the Salto di Quirra range in Sardinia. The engine developed by Avio, with a thrust class of 10 tons, is the first of its kind to be successfully tested in Europe.
