Space debris mitigation through a new device to be installed on Vega C
Avio S.p.A., a leading European rocket manufacturer and launch services provider, and BULL Co., Ltd., a Japanese start-up developing a space debris prevention device, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to study the implementation of an innovative space debris prevention device onboard the Vega C launcher.
Colleferro (Rome), January 15th 2025 – Avio S.p.A. and BULL Co., Ltd. have signed a MOU to begin a joint feasibility study finalized at the installation of BULL's PMD (Post Mission Disposal) device “HORN” on the VESPA double launch structure of the Vega C rocket allowing to accelerate the re-entry of the separated structure after the end of launch operations.
Avio has recently signed the ESA Zero Debris Charter and is fully committed to it. All components of Vega-C rocket are systematically de-orbited after launch, including the AVUM+ upper stage which systematically performs a re-entry burn to leave the orbit clean after satellite deployment. The collaboration with BULL shall allow to further enhance the Vega C respect of a clean orbital environment.
